The Spoon in the Bathroom Wall

“You’re nothing but a brain-o!” Rufus says to Martha Snapdragon, a student who lives with her janitor father Luther Snapdragon in the boiler room at Horace E. Bloggins School. They are a poor family but at least they have each other. Martha’s mother has died a few years earlier and Luther Snapdragon seems lost without her. As Rufus points out, Martha is a very intelligent girl but she is much more than that.
Martha’s favorite teacher is Mrs. Ferlin (rhymes with Merlin), the school’s science teacher. The school’s bully is called Rufus. Rufus hates Martha because his dad always says, “You should be like her because one day she is going to be someone.”
One day Martha gets tired of Rufus complaining her being so perfect, so everyday late at night Martha helps Rufus catch up with his learning.
One day Martha goes to the bathroom and sees a giant tongue. Then suddenly she runs out the door and tells Dr. Klunk the school principal about the giant tongue. After that Dr. Klunk runs straight away to the bathroom to see it with Luther Snapdragon. They find out that it is just a spoon. Under the spoon, it says, “Whoso pulleth this spoon from this wall is rightwise king of all Bloggins.”
The most exciting part is the climax when someone pulls the spoon out. Read the story to find out who pulls the spoon out and becomes the king of all Bloggins.
This book reminds me of The Sword in the Stone. The spoon is like the sword, Martha is like the little boy and Dr. Klunk is like the Knight who tells the little boy to get a sword for him. Whoever pulls the sword out is just like whoever pulls the spoon out – that person will be king.
I recommend this book to third graders and fourth graders because it is easy and fun to read.
