Ten-year-old Bud, not Buddy, Caldwell lives in a foster home in Flint, Michigan during the depression. His Mom is dead and he doesn’t know his dad. His latest foster family has a 12-year-old son who gets Bud in trouble. When Bud is locked in a shed with a hornet’s nest he freaks and breaks out of the shed grabbing a suitcase with all his possessions and runs away. He remembers his Mom crying over a jazz poster of Herman Calloway and Bud is convinced Calloway is his Dad. He catches a ride to Grand Rapids, Michigan where he meets the band and is befriended by the lead singer. She helps him as Bud finds out information about his runaway mother, her father, and Herman Calloway. Will Bud ever discover the truth? Read this book to find out.
An exciting part of the story is when Bud is locked in a shed where a hornet’s nest is in the corner. He’s afraid of the dark but then hears a sound.“It sounded like a buzz saw had been turned on in the shed. All of a sudden it felt like someone had stuck a red-hot nail right into my left cheek.” The descriptions are vivid and frightening.
If you like adventure and action this book has plenty of it. Bud is very energetic and fun.
Another book I would recommend that is similar to this one is The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson except the main character is a girl.
Christopher Paul Curtis was born in Flint Michigan. He won the Newbery medal and the Coretta Scott King Award in 2000 for the book Bud, Not Buddy. He lives in Canada with his wife and two children. He has written many books: Elijah of Buxton, Bucking the Sarge, The Watsons go to Birmingham – 1963, Mr. Chickee’s Messy Mission, and Mr. Chickee’s Funny Money. Reader Comments
